Supply chain digitization is a tricky topic. It's much talked about right now, and surveys show digitization overall is a high priority for most CEOs.
But what is it really: a holistic approach to automating processes and data management, or simply an umbrella term for a mishmash of different technologies?
A little of both, SCDigest would argue.
Trying to sort some of that out, SCDigest recently partnered with JDA Software on a survey on supply chain digitization, from which JDA has created an excellent summary report.
From that report is the chart below, highlighting results from a question that asked respondents to pick three digitization-related technologies from a long list that they believed would deliver the most value.
Which Digitization Technologies will Drive the Greatest Value?
(Percent Picking as One of Top 3)
Source: JDA and SCDigest
As can be seen, investments in supply chain visibility topped the list, selected a top 3 in delivering value by 59% of respondents, followed by number 2 "advanced analytics" (52%) and number 3 "integration with trading partners" (44%).
RFID (whatever happened with that in supply chain anyways?) and augmented reality were at the bottom of the list, but as Doug Kimball of JDA recently noted, there might be real value in using the latter technology in distribution centers in support of order picking - and perhaps the current Pokemon Go phenomenon will trigger more looks in the AR direction.
The excellent full report with all the data can be found here: The Future Is Now - Harnessing the power of digitization to drive
greater supply chain performance.
